Photography Exhibition : Edinburgh
William Carrick : 19th Century Russia
This is not only a remarkable collection of photographs but also a remarkable story. William Carrick (1827-1878) was born in Edinburgh but moved to Kronstadt (Russia) when he was only a few weeks old. In 1859 he established himself (with assistant John MacGregor) as a professional photographer in St. Petersburg; making a name for himself capturing pictures of Russian life and pioneering Russian ethnographic photography.
